2 frigates on track to arrive in 2 years
The delivery of the two missile-armed frigates will allow the Philippine Navy to be in a more comfortable position to carry out its patrol mandate, said Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
The two missile-armed frigates are currently being built by South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries. Delivery is set in two years’ time.
It can be noted that several of the Navy’s ships or its most capable ones are scheduled for periodic maintenance and upgrades, including its flagship the BRP Gregorio del Pilar (FF-15) which is still waiting for the replacement propellers following its grounding at the Hasa-Hasa Shoal on August 29 last year.
The ship is expected to become available for patrol duties by the end of the year.
“These ships will not be repaired all at the same time. It is a matter of scheduling. In two years’ time, when we get our two frigates, we will be more comfortable,” Lorenzana said.#
