64 Filipinos affected by Ottawa tornadoes get aid – DFA
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has released about P670,000 to assist overseas Filipinos affected by tornadoes that hit Canada last September, according to DFA assistant secretary Elmer Cato.
“Sixty-four affected overseas Filipinos received USD200 each, with a total value of P670,000,” Cato said on Friday.
The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa confirmed through a letter dated Dec. 5 the disbursement of financial assistance.
According to Philippine ambassador to Ottawa Petronila Garcia, the recipients were those who requested financial aid on or before October 31.
Garcia said the embassy will not be able to process requests submitted after October 31.
“We shall, however, remain ready to facilitate the processing of consular documents, which may have been lost or destroyed by the tornadoes,” the envoy noted.
Tornadoes tore through the Ottawa-Gatineau region on September 21. No death was reported but more than a dozen were injured.#
