Coast Guard rescues fishermen in Leyte
The Philippine Coast Guard rescued three fishermen that were reported missing while on fishing venture off the coast in Southern Leyte last week.
The Coast Guard said the rescued fishermen were Jomar Anajao, 22, and two minors, both 15 years old, who are all residents of Barangay Fatima, Liloan, Southern Leyte.
According to reports received in the Coast Guard Action Center, the fishermen were last seen on September 1 at around 9 p.m. two nautical miles away from vicinity waters off Barangay Candayuman, Liloan.
On September 2, the Coast Guard Sub-station Liloan personnel and Coast Guard K-9 team conducted a search and rescue operation from Barangay San Roque to Barangay Caligangan but yielded negative result.
At around 2 p.m. on the same day, while transiting at Cabalian Bay, the team sighted the fishermen on-board a non-motorized boat. The Coast Guard immediately towed the boat from the bay en route to Barangay San Roque, Liloan
Further investigation revealed that the three fishermen departed Barangay Candayuman on-board their non-motorized boat on September 1 at around 8 p.m. Unfortunately, the fishermen encountered big waves and strong winds due to thunderstorms prevailing in the area and drifted to Cabalian Bay.
They managed to paddle their banca and took shelter to the nearest shoreline. They decided to do minor repair of the damages to their banca and continue paddling back to Liloan before they were found by the local Coast Guard.#
