Coast Guard rescues 44 persons as motor banca sinks off Dinagat Island
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said 38 passengers and six crew members were rescued from a submerged motor banca at vicinity waters off Dinagat Island in Surigao del Norte on Friday.
In a statement on Saturday, the PCG said the rescue was led by Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Roxas, after a certain Carolina Echin reported the incident. Personnel from CGSS Roxas proceeded to the area – off Dinagat Islands between Poblacion Rizal, Basilisa, Province of Dinagat Islands and Danawan Island in Surigao del Norte – to conduct search and rescue operations.
While underway, they sighted the distressed motor banca “Danrev Express” and some passengers in the water. PCG said the team immediately conducted a rescue operation and transferred the 38 passengers and six crew members to other motor pump boats.
According to the PCG, CGSS Roxas’ investigation revealed that while underway from Poblacion Rizal, Basilisa in the province of Dinagat Islands bound for Surigao City, the motor banca was accidentally struck by floating debris of wood which caused a hole at the starboard side bow and subsequently submerged.
The PCG added that all the passengers and crew were successfully rescued and brought to Barangay Poblacion Rizal, while others were brought to Barangay Roxas, and “were sent home to their respective families in good physical condition.” #
