2 rebels killed, 3 soldiers wounded in Army-NPA clash in Panay
Two soldiers were killed while three others were wounded in the series of encounters between the military and remnants of terrorists from the New People’s Army in Iloilo last week.
Security forces from the 61st Infantry Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division on Saturday recovered the body of two rebels after responding to reports from residents that a CPP-NPA terrorist was recruiting children in the area.
The killed rebels were Elvin Tanatoy and Domingo Servano Jr.; both residents of Tubungan town.
Recovered from the encounter were an M653 and an AK 47 rifles, personal belongings and subversive documents.
The military said the rebels were using a family as human shields as they withdrew from their position during the firefight. A 12-year old girl was hit by a bullet on her buttock.
According to the victim’s mother, the rebels stayed in their house against their will.
“It is a clear indication that people in the community are tired of them persistently pestering their way of life thru threats, extortion, and violence,” said Brig. Gen. Dinoh Dolina, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division.
Lt. Col. Sesinando Magbalot Jr., 61IB commanding officer, said, “We will continue to pressure the enemy to secure the people in our area of responsibility.”
Another encounter was reported between soldiers from the 61IB and 10 NPA terrorists in Barangay Caratagan, Calinog. Three soldiers were slightly wounded when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded.
“It is unfortunate to note that while our troops are implementing peace and development initiatives to help the people, the NPAs continue perpetrating terroristic activities detrimental to our people,” Dolina said. “It clearly shows that the CPP-NPA terrorists’ violates the Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.”
“We call on all peace-loving people to add their voices to condemn this barbaric act of the NPAs especially that the Barangay and SK elections are coming. We are still humbly calling on the ranks of the CPP-NPA to lay down their arms, abandon the armed struggle, live a peaceful life and join us in peacefully resolving the armed conflict,” Dolina also said.#
