Duterte : PH-China defense cooperation crucial in regional stability

A strengthened defense cooperation between the Philippines and China will help ensure peace and stability not just in the two countries but also in the Asia-Pacific region.

President Rodrigo Duterte stressed this on Wednesday as he cited the need for both countries to remain defense allies to address various security issues confronting their countries, including terrorism.

These concerted efforts of the Philippines and China, he said, have secured peace, stability, and development in the region.

“The Chinese side supports the efforts made by Mr. President and the Philippine government in upholding the security and stability of your country,” he also said.

Duterte and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang had an extended bilateral meeting in Malacanang Palace Wednesday as part of the latter’s Official Visit here.

Duterte said that apart from defense cooperation, Duterte said the Philippines is keen on discussing how to improve bilateral relations with China further.

Li said the Chinese government would provide 150 million RMB Yuan of grants for the rebuilding and improvement of livelihood in Marawi City following the defeat of Muslim terrorists who invaded it.

He expressed confidence that the rebuilding of Marawi will be completed under the Duterte administration.

He also said that mutual trust and confidence-building have led to increased interaction on many levels of the two governments.

“I am pleased to note the positive turnaround and vigorous momentum of Philippines-China relations,” said a Joint Statement released by Malacanang Palace.

The President thanked Li for its support for the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship and its assistance to the country’s Build, Build, Build infrastructure initiatives;

“With pragmatism, mutual respect, sincerity, equality, and shared benefit, the friendly relations between our two countries will forge ahead, determined to secure a prosperous future for both our peoples,” he added.
