Four Vietnamese kidnap victims, all crew members of Vietnamese cargo ship, “MV Giang Hai,” were rescued by Philippine Navy intelligence operatives in Tawi Tawi on Saturday morning.
Navy vessels under the operational control of Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) rescued the victims in Kang Tipayan Island in Languya.
The victims were identified as Buy Xuan Vien, Bui Trung Duc, Nguyen Huu Trong and Nguyen Quang Huy. The fourth victim, Nguyen Huu Trong, died during captivity because of a lingering illness.
The three victims were brought to a military hospital to undergo medical check-up and debriefing prior to their turn over to authorities and soon enough to the government of Vietnam.
The Vietnamese nationals were abducted on February 19, 2017, by armed men about 17 nautical miles off the shores of Pearl Bank, Tawi Tawi.
According to Rear Admiral Rene Medina, NFWM commander, the Naval Intelligence and Security Group – Western Mindanao (NISG-WM) and the Naval Task Force 61 carried out a special intelligence operation after it received a report about the lax security by the captors during night time.
Earlier on August 20, 2017, Do Trung Huie, another Vietnamese kidnap victim, was rescued by elements of Joint Task Force Basilan and Naval Task Force 61 of NFWM. Huie was kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf Group in Coco Island Basilan on November 11, 2016.
Medina said the Navy in Western Mindanao region will continue to patrol and secure Philippine waters from kidnappings and other lawless activities by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group and other kidnap-for-ransom groups. #
